There are two types of R&D tax relief that you might be eligible to claim for: one is the SME scheme for small and medium sized businesses, the other is the Research & Development Expenditure Credit, which is aimed at larger companies. What counts as R&D?

Many businesses are missing out on tax incentives from the government simply because they do not realise that they can claim. Part of this is a lack of understanding around what is actually meant by R&D and how it applies to renewable energy. R&D refers to work that you do to attempt to solve a problem for the field as a whole. This must be in either a scientific or technological pursuit. And you don’t need to show that you can up with a working solution to the problem, only that you carried out work attempting to do so. You are eligible to claim tax relief on a large range of costs as a part of this work, including everything from staff costs and external workers, through to software expenses and payments to third parties.
